2008 World Series of Poker World Championship Mixed Event (Event 8)

The 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) $10 000 World Championship Mixed Event (Event 8) was held from Wednesday, 04 June to Friday, 06 June, 2008.

The World Championship Mixed Event at the 39th World Series of Poker welcomed a 192-strong field of players, including the likes of Gus Hansen (who was knocked out on the final table bubble in 10th place); 2007 WSOP Player of the Year, Tom Schneider; and two-time Main Event champions and Hall-of-Famers, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan.

This new event on the WSOP schedule offered a prize pool of just over $1.8 million. The new Mixed Event is similar to the H.O.R.S.E. events, in that players must be skilled in more than one form of poker. But Event 8, the $10 000 World Championship Mixed Event, is an even tougher test of the players’ all-round poker playing abilities, as the event incorporates an incredible eight different variations of poker. These are:

The Bracelet Winner

Anthony Rivera claimed his first WSOP winner’s bracelet in Event 8 – the World Championship Mixed Event – at just 22 years of age. Primarily a cash game professional poker player, Rivera plays mainly at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, although he has taken part in a few live tournaments. He may look to do so more often following his bracelet victory in the 2008 World Series of Poker Mixed Event!

Rivera knocked out James Mackey on the first hand of heads-up play after Mackey had gone All In with A-9 against Rivera’s A-K. Rivera’s Ace high with King kicker held up to see him become the inaugural Mixed Event champion.
