High Profile Cashes at the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event

There were obviously a number of high-profile cashes at the 2008 Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), despite the final table being made up of 9 relative unknowns. The 2008 World Series of Poker reinforced the extent of the worldwide poker explosion, with professionals finding it ever harder to shine at the WSOP Main Event as the field grows every year.

Heading the list of big name money finishers at the 2008 Main Event was two-time WSOP bracelet winner Phi Nguyen, who placed 26th to earn over $257 000.

Mike “The Mouth” Matusow was hot on Nguyen’s heels. The three-time WSOP bracelet winner claimed his 25th WSOP money finish, placing 30th at the 2008 Main Event for $193 000.

Phil Hellmuth, leader of the All-Time winner’s list with 11 WSOP bracelets, placed 45th to win $154 400.

2006 Player of the Year, Jeff Madsen, finished 112th at the 2008 Main Event, for almost $41 816, while 2005 Player of the Year, Allen Cunningham, placed 117th for the same amount of money.

The next big name was the Great Dane, Gus Hansen, who despite finishing 160th earned the same amount as Madsen and Cunningham, as did the Texan, Hoyt Corkins, who finished 162nd.

Winner of back-to-back World Series Main Event titles in 1987 and 1988, Johnny Chan, finished 329th at the 2008 Main Event, earning over $32 000, while up-and-coming Frenchman Bertrand Grospellier came 370th for just under $29 000.

The final table of the 2008 Main Event at the World Series of Poker will commence on 9 November, as the survivors battle it out for the first prize of over $9 million and the title of poker’s World Champion for 2008.
