Born and raised in Taiwan, Liu moved to the US after college to complete a Master’s Degree in computer science at Bradley University in Illionois.
As a young software engineer, Liu began working for Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, California – one of the world’s leading designers and builders of communication satellites – but her talents were soon transferred to the world of poker.

While J.J. Liu has yet to win an event at the World Series of Poker, she is one of the more successful women in poker, having managed 11 money finishes at the WSOP, including 2 final table appearances.

J.J. Liu has placed higher than any other woman in a World Poker Tour Championship event, following her runner-up finish to Ted Forrest a the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Stars tournament in 2007.
She has finished in the money 5 times, including 2 final tables, on the World Poker Tour.
Liu won the 2005 World Poker Challenge in Reno, claiming a pot of $90 000, and finished the year as the top-ranked woman in CardPlayer Magazine’s 2005 Player of the Year competition.
Liu was also victorious at the 2006 WPT Ladies Night Out event at the Legends of Poker tournament.
Liu is well known for her wit and says, "I enjoy beating all the boys. I want to spank their butts. Poker is not lifting weights. Everybody can play. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman."
This said, J.J. Liu is best known for her smart poker play. She credits her poker success to her study of The Art of War by Sun Tzu.
As of 2008, Liu boasts total live tournament winnings of over $1.6 million.
